Coca-Cola said last Friday that they will suspend all advertising on social media "for at least 30 days" beginning in July.

The announcement corresponds to the latest consumer company to abandon Facebook amid a boycott for its handling of hate speech and disinformation.

"We will take this time to reevaluate our advertising standards and policies to determine if internal reviews are needed and what else can we expect from our social media partners to clear the platforms of hate, violence and inappropriate content," the company said in a statement.

"We will let them know that we expect more accountability, action and transparency from them."

Shares of Facebook and Twitter fell more than 7% in mid-day trading on Friday after Unilever said it would withdraw its advertising from social media companies for the rest of the year.

Facebook will ban ads that use scapegoats, immigrants, racial groups or other groups as part of a broader action against hate speech, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said Friday.

The expanded policy will ban ads that claim these groups are a threat, Zuckerberg said in a live broadcast on Friday. The new policy will also ban negative announcements about immigrants or asylum seekers.
