MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTING -IAB, ENG. JOSE LUIS SACA, ON THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

"Proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations, we celebrate on May, Wednesday 3, the World Press Freedom Day.

Freedom of Expression is an essential right of human beings and a fundamental value for the peaceful, democratic coexistence of nations.

In this context, journalists and media play an essential role in the distribution of information, ideas and opinions of varied nature, which enables citizens to be informed and to form their own opinions.

In order to fulfill this social mission entrusted to them, States must, in accordance with the provisions of the International Conventions, assure the media and their journalists have the conditions of security, freedom and independence they need while carrying out their work.

Unfortunately, different forms of censorship occur in the region, in addition to the alarming number of attacks and crimes against journalists, most of which remain unpunished.

These acts constitute an attack on the peoples, depriving them of the right to information.

In this special day, IAB renew its unchanging commitment in the fight for the full validity and promotion of Freedom of Expression and Press, as essential elements to reach more equitable, prosperous and democratic societies."
