Press Release - International Association of Broadcasting – IAB - Guatemala

The International Association of Broadcasters (IAB), which represents more than 17,000 radio and television stations in the Americas, reiterates its strong condemnation of the unjust imprisonment of the journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, founder of the newspaper El Periódico of Guatemala, and categorically rejects the recent decision of the Third Court of Appeals of Guatemala to overturn the substitute measure that placed him under house arrest.

This decision represents a new and alarming violation of freedom of expression and due process in Guatemala.

José Rubén Zamora Marroquín has been imprisoned for more than two years for exercising his right to criticise corruption in the Central American country.

IAB once again urges the full and immediate release of José Rubén Zamora and reiterates its call on the public institutions of Guatemala to act in strict compliance with the principles and postulates of the American Convention on Human Rights, guaranteeing the right to due
process for the journalist and all those involved in this case.
