IAB expresses concern over the persistence of violations of freedom of expression and human rights in Venezuela

The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) expresses its deep concern over the persistence of severe restrictions on freedom of expression in Venezuela, as well as over the situation of journalists and communicators who remain detained for reasons linked to the exercise of their journalistic work.

The IAB recalls that the detention of journalists for political reasons, the criminalization of independent journalism, and undue pressure on media outlets constitute violations of international human rights standards and directly affect the public’s right to be properly informed.

In this context, the IAB demands the immediate release of all journalists and communicators detained in Venezuela for the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression, as well as the cessation of all forms of harassment, intimidation, or censorship against the media.

The full restoration of freedom of expression and freedom of the press is an indispensable condition for the reconstruction of the rule of law and for the definitive return of democracy in Venezuela.

The IAB reiterates its solidarity with Venezuelan journalists and its ongoing commitment to the defense of freedom of expression throughout the Americas.
