The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the murder of Mexican journalist Carlos Castro, director of the digital outlet Código Norte Veracruz, which took place in the city of Poza Rica, in the state of Veracruz.
This crime, carried out in a public setting and in a targeted manner, is particularly serious given that the journalist had previously reported threats and had been granted protection measures by state authorities. His killing once again exposes the extreme vulnerability under which journalists operate in large regions of Mexico.
IAB expresses deep concern over the repeated lethal attacks against journalists in Veracruz, one of the most dangerous states in the country for the practice of journalism. IAB warns that persistent impunity, the lack of effective investigations, and the withdrawal or insufficiency of protection mechanisms significantly aggravate this situation.
IAB expresses its solidarity with the family, colleagues, and the journalistic community of Carlos Castro, and urges Mexican authorities at both the state and federal levels to carry out a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation to identify and hold accountable both the material and intellectual perpetrators of this crime.
Protecting the lives of journalists is an undeniable obligation of the State and an essential condition for safeguarding freedom of expression and the public’s right to be informed.
