The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB), an organization that for more than 80 years has worked in defense of Freedom of Expression throughout the Americas, expresses its deepest concern and strongest rejection regarding the recent statements made by the President of Mexico in relation to TV Azteca, a member of our organization and one of the leading broadcasting and television networks in the region.
IAB considers it especially concerning that, from the highest office of the State, statements may be issued that involve public disqualifications or calls directed against a media outlet because of its editorial line, its information, or its opinions.
In every democratic society, the exercise of Freedom of Expression requires a climate of full respect toward the media, independent journalism, and the right of citizens to receive plural and diverse information, free from pressure or stigmatization originating from public authorities.
Criticism, debate, and the existence of independent and critical media constitute essential elements of democracy and of the free flow of ideas. Therefore, IAB recalls that public officials, especially those holding the highest institutional responsibilities, have a special duty of tolerance and respect toward the expressions, opinions, and information disseminated by the media.
IAB reiterates its full solidarity with TV Azteca and with all media organizations that carry out their work with independence and journalistic responsibility, and reaffirms its permanent commitment to the defense of Freedom of Expression, Freedom of the Press, and informational pluralism throughout the Americas.
Likewise, IAB calls for the preservation of a democratic climate based on mutual respect, tolerance, and full adherence to international principles and standards regarding Freedom of Expression and Democracy.
